Kindle Fire Accessories — Other Than Covers and Sleeves

By

This Hub will give you an overview of the types of accessories — other than covers and sleeves — available for Amazon’s new $199 entertainment tablet, the Kindle Fire.

Amazon announced their newest Kindle, the Kindle Fire — an entertainment tablet — on September 28, 2011. The first Fires were scheduled to leave Amazon’s distribution centers on November 15, 2011, but some customers were fortunate enough to have their tablets shipped a day early.

Two Fires were delivered to my house on November 16, 2011, one for me and one for my boyfriend. I have spent a lot of time researching the accessories available for the Fire. I’m not going to discuss covers and sleeves since those have already been discussed in several other Hubs.

What is a tablet?

A tablet is a flat, wireless, touchscreen, backlit computer. The technical details for the Kindle Fire entertainment tablet can be found on the device’s product page on amazon.com. If you click on the link in the first paragraph of this article and scroll down on the page, you'll find information from Amazon regarding their new device.

Stylus

A stylus is a pointing or navigation tool that helps one navigate the screen on a touchscreen device, such as a tablet, quickly. I purchased a stylus for each of our Fires as a way to keep greasy fingerprints off the Gorilla© Glass screens. The tool isn’t a necessity, but I think it’s an inexpensive “plus.”

External Speaker

An external speaker also isn’t a necessity, but it’s a nice to have. I had purchased one external speaker for each of our Kindle Keyboards (e-book readers), and we’re using those with our Fires. The speaker runs on three AAA batteries and plugs into the headphone jack on the Kindle Keyboards and Kindle Fires. For an inexpensive speaker, the sound is great!

Skin

Many persons like to decorate their Kindle devices with decal skins, removable vinyl sticker-like coverings. A skin gives a distinctive look to your Kindle. I have a skin on my Kindle Keyboard, but neither of us has a skin on our Fires. The skins manufactured by Decalgirl are extremely popular.

Screen Protector Shield or Anti-Glare Shield

Some persons purchase a screen protector shield or an anti-glare shield for their Fires. I have not purchased either type of shield for our tablets because I have read that dust can get between the shield and the Gorilla© Glass screen, thus making it more difficult to see the screen clearly.

Have you purchased accessories for your Kindle Fire?

If you have purchased accessories for your Kindle Fire entertainment tablet, please let everyone know which accessories you purchased, and what you like or dislike about them.

I don't have a Kindle Fire yet, but I want to get one at the end of the month. I didn't even realize there were so many accessories for it. I have so much to learn. Thanks for sharing! Voted up and useful. :-)

When I get a Kindle I will definitely get a stylus and a cover. I think if I had did that with my iPod it wouldn't be looking as rough and tumble as it does. Great information Daisy!

Jeanie,

Thanks for reading my article. I own three Kindle devices: two e-book readers (DX and Kindle Keyboard) and the Kindle Fire tablet. If you have questions regarding any of the Kindles or the accessories, please post them here...or send me an e-mail message.

Alecia,

I can't use my Kindle Fire touchscreen tablet without the capacitive stylus. Typing by tapping the screen just doesn't work for me.

The screen on the Kindle Fire is something called Gorilla Glass. It's extremely hard and durable, but it's best to protect the device when it's not in use.

I use the Kindle app on my netbook which means I need to accessorize my mini-computer! I would like to have the Kindle Fire, but I just have too many electronics as it is. Plus, I'm broke :-(

Hi Daisy, I love the idea of decorating the Kindle Fire with cool skins. Thanks for sharing all these useful accessories.

Austinstar,

Thanks for reading my article. I have the Kindle app on my PC, plus I own two models of Kindle e-book readers (DX and Kindle Keyboard), and I own a Kindle Fire touchscreen tablet. One can never have too many electronics.

At less than $200, Amazon really has a winner with the Kindle Fire.

Cloverleaf,

We have two Kindle Keyboard e-book readers in our household and two Kindle Fires. By having skins on mine, we can easily tell them apart.
