Live the Adventure, Honor the Legend

Named for the Battle of Midway, the USS Midway (CV-41) was the first aircraft carrier to be commissioned after the end of World War II.

It holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. (It was commissioned on September 10, 1945 and decommissioned on April 11, 1992).

The carrier was opened to the public as a museum on June 7, 2004 at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, California. There are more than 60 exhibits throughout the ship, and more than 25 restored aircraft on the flight deck.

Come along with me on a tour of my favorite museum in San Diego, the USS Midway Museum.

The Tour

Included in the admission price is a self-guided audio walking tour. You’ll be walking a few miles while onboard the Midway — and climbing several flights of stairs and even some ladders — so be sure you wear very comfortable shoes. Some of the passageways, compartments, stairways, and ladders are narrow — you won’t want to be carrying a large purse, tote bag or backpack. And since you'll be walking for hours, you probably won't want to be carrying heavy camera equipment. A small digital camera will be fine.

If you have claustrophobia, there are some areas of the ship you won’t want to explore. The Engine Room is one of those. Walking down a narrow flight of stairs and going into a confined space with a lot of other tourists milling about didn’t appeal to my boyfriend and me when we visited the Midway. Also, we didn't like the sickly look on some visitors' faces after they came back up the stairs.

On parts of the video tour, you’re walking single file on a one-way route. There is plenty to see, but you’re walking and walking and walking some more, and you get the feeling you’re never going to leave that part of the ship...or see daylight again.

Docents

Docents — Navy veterans — stationed throughout the ship will share with you their personal accounts of life aboard the Midway and are happy to answer your questions. Please take the time to speak with the docents, hear their anecdotes, and thank them for their service. We really enjoyed speaking with the docents. My boyfriend and I could see how happy these gentlemen were to discuss their Navy days with us.

The Battle of Midway

As I mentioned earler, the USS Midway was named in honor of the Battle of Midway.

Dave, a US Navy veteran and one of my favorite HubPages authors, wrote a fantastic series of articles about the Battle of Midway. After leaving your comments regarding my Hub, please read Dave's articles. Thank you.

Very informative, well written hub. I haven't toured a ship before, but this looks wonderful. If I ever make it to your coast I will check it out. As always, great work!

Tammy,

I'm glad you enjoyed my article. San Diego is only about an hour and a half south of where I live. If you ever visit San Diego, I'll meet you there.

Hi Daisy Mariposa-

I have never been to California, but I do plan to travel there. My hubby is a big history buff and I am sure he would enjoy visiting this museum. You have cited many interesting facts and helpful tips. Thank you for sharing.

Nice informative hub - voted up!

Miss Olive,

Thanks for commenting. San Diego is a great vacation destination. Since we're so close, we try to spend a weekend in San Diego every year or so. Last year was the first time we visited the Midway. After writing this Hub, I'm ready to visit the museum again.

Go Missolive, Go! Thanks Daisy for a "kick in the memory".

My wife and I went across country in our RV last winter and spent 6 months staying in campgrounds from Palm Springs to San Diego. We really loved San Diego the best of all of Southern California.

It is such a great town to roam around down along the bay, and has so many interesting things to do and places to see.

Don,

Thanks for stopping by. Of all the cities in California, my favorites are San Diego, San Francisco, and the one in which I live.

Seeing that you're a Navy veteran (I just read your profile), you did visit the USS Midway, didn't you?

Of course! I was on the USS America when I was serving, so, I had to take the tour. Lots of Pics and everything. The total tourist that day! It brought back a lot of memories. If all of our kids and family were not on the East Coast, we would actually have moved there. Such a town!

Don,

It would be wondeful if someone who served on the USS Midway discovered this Hub, wouldn't it? I'd love to read some comments regarding their service on the ship.

Outstanding Hub! As a Navy Vet myself, I can't thank you enough for bringing attention to a worthy destination. So much history that ship has been involved in. And thank you for the gracious shout out!

thejeffriestube,

Thanks for your very kind words. My Hub about the flying lesson I took had been the article I was most proud of, but now I think my Midway Hub is #1 on my list.

I would love it if some Navy Vets who served on the Midway would read this article and leave a comment. Is there any way you could spread the word? Thanks.

Of course I will! I actually work with some pretty old vets (older than me) that may have served onboard. I'll pass the link!

my grandfather lived in imperial beach and fought in world war 2. He never took us here, which is odd, because he was also a college history professor. If I ever make it down there again, I'll be sure to go!

This hub intersted me so much because my brother is on the USS John C Stennis thats been all over the news lately. This hub gave me a glimpse of what his ship must be like. He doesnt share much about his military career so I have to get my info from people like you and museums like the one you wrote about. Great Hub Daisy!!

Since you live in Orange Country, driving to the Midway would only take you about an hour and one-half. It's a great destination to include on a weekend mini-vacation.

Thanks so much for commenting. Flying from England to New York would be a much shorter trip for you. I just published a Hub that discusses history museums in New York City. One of the museums I mention is the USS Intrepid, another aircraft carrier.

I served onboard the midway,I was with VF161 in 1971 and 1972. I still have some great 8mm movies of flight ops and under way replenishment. It was a wonderful time in my life and would not trade it for the world.

Very informative hub on USS Midway, the US naval aircraft carrier. While I was in school our group visited INS Vikrant (R11), the Indian navy aircraft carrier. That was long, long back but I still remember the visit as being awesome and the carrier as being of epic physical proportions and we just walked for what seemed ages. It was decommissioned after 36 years of service and today is serving as a maritime museum in Mumbai.

Daisy, if you happen to visit Mumbai in future you must make it a point to visit it.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of history.

Voted up & interesting.

Rajan,

Thanks for reading and commenting in another of my articles. I spent three weeks in Mumbai several years ago but, unfortunately, I didn't visit the INS Vikrant (R11). Should my travels take me to India again, I will certainly visit the maritime museum.

I know that you've visited California a few times. Have you ever been to San Diego?
