USS Midway: San Diego, California Museum

Live the Adventure, Honor the Legend
Named for the Battle of Midway, the USS Midway (CV-41) was the first aircraft carrier to be commissioned after the end of World War II.
It holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. (It was commissioned on September 10, 1945 and decommissioned on April 11, 1992).
The carrier was opened to the public as a museum on June 7, 2004 at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, California. There are more than 60 exhibits throughout the ship, and more than 25 restored aircraft on the flight deck.
Come along with me on a tour of my favorite museum in San Diego, the USS Midway Museum.

The Tour
Included in the admission price is a self-guided audio walking tour. You’ll be walking a few miles while onboard the Midway — and climbing several flights of stairs and even some ladders — so be sure you wear very comfortable shoes. Some of the passageways, compartments, stairways, and ladders are narrow — you won’t want to be carrying a large purse, tote bag or backpack. And since you'll be walking for hours, you probably won't want to be carrying heavy camera equipment. A small digital camera will be fine.
If you have claustrophobia, there are some areas of the ship you won’t want to explore. The Engine Room is one of those. Walking down a narrow flight of stairs and going into a confined space with a lot of other tourists milling about didn’t appeal to my boyfriend and me when we visited the Midway. Also, we didn't like the sickly look on some visitors' faces after they came back up the stairs.
On parts of the video tour, you’re walking single file on a one-way route. There is plenty to see, but you’re walking and walking and walking some more, and you get the feeling you’re never going to leave that part of the ship...or see daylight again.

Both of Bush's crewmates were killed. Bush managed to release his payload and hit the target before being forced to bail out of the aircraft. For his heroic actions, George H.W. Docents
Docents — Navy veterans — stationed throughout the ship will share with you their personal accounts of life aboard the Midway and are happy to answer your questions. Please take the time to speak with the docents, hear their anecdotes, and thank them for their service. We really enjoyed speaking with the docents. My boyfriend and I could see how happy these gentlemen were to discuss their Navy days with us.
The Battle of Midway
As I mentioned earler, the USS Midway was named in honor of the Battle of Midway.
Dave, a US Navy veteran and one of my favorite HubPages authors, wrote a fantastic series of articles about the Battle of Midway. After leaving your comments regarding my Hub, please read Dave's articles. Thank you.
- Nimitz and the JN-25 Code
The mood in the Pacific Theater in early 1942 was not one of victory, but one of constant fear of Japanese invasion plans. The West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii were all considered targets. - The Battle of Midway
As HYPO was working on cracking the JN-25 code, a common theme among all of the intercepts was the repeated use of the code group “AF.”

Hi Daisy Mariposa-
I have never been to California, but I do plan to travel there. My hubby is a big history buff and I am sure he would enjoy visiting this museum. You have cited many interesting facts and helpful tips. Thank you for sharing.
Nice informative hub - voted up!
Go Missolive, Go! Thanks Daisy for a "kick in the memory".
My wife and I went across country in our RV last winter and spent 6 months staying in campgrounds from Palm Springs to San Diego. We really loved San Diego the best of all of Southern California.
It is such a great town to roam around down along the bay, and has so many interesting things to do and places to see.
Of course! I was on the USS America when I was serving, so, I had to take the tour. Lots of Pics and everything. The total tourist that day! It brought back a lot of memories. If all of our kids and family were not on the East Coast, we would actually have moved there. Such a town!
Outstanding Hub! As a Navy Vet myself, I can't thank you enough for bringing attention to a worthy destination. So much history that ship has been involved in. And thank you for the gracious shout out!
Of course I will! I actually work with some pretty old vets (older than me) that may have served onboard. I'll pass the link!
What a great hub Daisy. Up interesting, and beautiful tribute...to all who serve! God bless our military personnel, both then and now!
What a great hub Daisy , I have to vote up and here's to so many more gems to share on here.
Take care and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
my grandfather lived in imperial beach and fought in world war 2. He never took us here, which is odd, because he was also a college history professor. If I ever make it down there again, I'll be sure to go!
This hub intersted me so much because my brother is on the USS John C Stennis thats been all over the news lately. This hub gave me a glimpse of what his ship must be like. He doesnt share much about his military career so I have to get my info from people like you and museums like the one you wrote about. Great Hub Daisy!!
Daisy, it would be a long weekend... it's about 18 hours if you drive properly, 22 if you don't want a ticket :-)
Been to San Diego numerous times but have never been to the Midway. Sounds like a worthwhile stop for my next trip. Voting this Up and Useful.
Thank you for the great history lesson!
Amazing service record of this ship. Thank you for sharing with us...
Hugs from Canada
I've never seen it but now I want to. Great hub with a fountain of information that has me drooling...as a history buff it's hard for me to ignore this hub...loved it and thank you for the info.
Was in San Diego once years ago and just remember the beautiful weather and the flowers. Wish I had known about the USS Midway-- I would definitely have visited. Next time. Love this hub and on my way over to read Dave's Hubs on the Battle of Midway now. Voting up and interesting
Very well written informative hub. Thanks for sharing the above info. Voted UP
Actually Daisy no, I haven't taken that quiz yet but I will right now.
This is a great hub Daisy - I like visiting museums and I am very interested in ships (maybe because my Dad served in the Navy), so this would be the ideal day out for me! Now, if only I could nip across to California!
Voted up etc.
I served onboard the midway,I was with VF161 in 1971 and 1972. I still have some great 8mm movies of flight ops and under way replenishment. It was a wonderful time in my life and would not trade it for the world.
Very informative hub on USS Midway, the US naval aircraft carrier. While I was in school our group visited INS Vikrant (R11), the Indian navy aircraft carrier. That was long, long back but I still remember the visit as being awesome and the carrier as being of epic physical proportions and we just walked for what seemed ages. It was decommissioned after 36 years of service and today is serving as a maritime museum in Mumbai.
Daisy, if you happen to visit Mumbai in future you must make it a point to visit it.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of history.
Voted up & interesting.
