Do you know the geography of the United States?

My quiz United States (US) Civil War: History Quiz was well-received. Many people commented that they had fun taking the quiz...and learned something new at the same time.

I hope the same holds true for this quiz about United States geography. Some questions will be easy for most people to answer. Some will be difficult since they're based upon more obscure facts.

Although the quiz deals with U.S. geography, it can be taken by residents of the United States and by people living outside the country. Please don't *cheat* and have a map of the U.S. in front of you — or use the Internet — while taking the quiz.

Good luck, and please be sure to post your score and a comment.

The answer to question 2 is wrong. Alaska is not the Easternmost point in the US...

Dave,

What happened? When you took my Civil War quiz, you were bragging that geography was a great subject for you and that you would do well on my U.S. geography quiz.

I only got a 44% boo.. but I still knew more about geography than the civil war!

Hi Daisy! Another great quiz. I screwed up on the Alaska longitude question but ended up being quite proud of myself on the rest. This really is a lot of fun!

Tammy,

I learned alot while writing this quiz. I wonder how many questions I would have gotten correct if I had taken the quiz without having been its author.

56%..........and I KNEW many of the answers AFTER I made a foolish guess..(that is my story and I am sticking to it)

Dexter,

I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz. The easternmost spot in the United States surprised me, so I verified that answer with at least a dozen sources.

Did you notice caption on the third photo? That's the easternmost spot *by longitude* in the United States.

CMerritt,

Your *excuse* sounds like something you might have used in high school...was it?

Have you taken my Civil War quiz? There's a link to it below the voting buttons for this quiz.

I got a 92%... but I'm lucky I got that high! I think 2 of the questions I got right just with a lucky guess. Like the 4 states that aren't considered states or whatever that question was. I studied your answers, noticed a pattern, and guessed it correctly. I had no clue otherwise! lol. Still this was a lot of fun! Some tough questions, but it is funny because a lot of them seemed like they should be stuff we know. Oh I do have one question for you though... how is Alaska both the eastern and western most point in the United States? Just curious!

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa Hub Author 4 months ago

Uninvited Writer,

Thanks so much for commenting.

Question #2 asked "According to the U.S. Geological Survey, by longitude, what is the easternmost point in the United States?" The key words in the question were "by longitude." You might have missed that.

The Aleutian Islands cross the Greenwich Meridian. This makes them the easternmost point in the United States. Pochnoi Point on Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska is at 179°46'E.

I put a hint about this question on Facebook a little while ago.

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa Hub Author 4 months ago

mythicalstorm273,

Thanks so much for taking the quiz. To answer your question about Alaska having both the easternmost and westernmost points in the United States, it has to do with the Greenwich Meridian. Take a look at a map, or better yet a globe, and you'll see that a tiny bit of one of the Aleutian Islands crosses the Greenwich Meridian.

Daisy I only managed 40% which is not great I know!. But it is quite sometime since I studied the map of the US. Thanks for adding this quiz it would be interesting to see over time just how much people do know. Voted up-awesome.

Brian,

I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz. There have been a few studies over the years regarding school-age children and geography.

Unfortunately, students in the U.S. haven't done very well in the studies. I'll have to look up the statistics and post them. One thing I do remember from the reports: many school children couldn't place Chicago on a map...

That's a cool hub, but I scored a 36%. I've never been good at Geography, and those were pretty specific. Hopefully I learned something!

Victoria Lynn,

I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz. When I wrote it, I tried to include a mix of both easy and difficult questions. I didn't know, however, how much geography the people who would be taking the quiz would have been taught in school.

......well the hubpage legend himself got 36% but I am Canadian and I would bet that most Americans would get the same about Canadian geography or even less - and I am distracted at the moment with a naked lady - lol - her name is Pamela Lee Anderson and I saw more of her actually than this quiz - and if this sounds like a BS story then you really don't know Epi that well - lol - but he will make it up to you after he sobers up and post this most wonderful idea of a hub to his Facebook page with a direct link back here and please keep this idea going - it's superb and a lot of fun with your clothes on - but don't tell Pamela that!

Daisy...

I suck. Let's just say that if I was wandering around...I might fall into the Grand Canyon because I had no idea New Jersey owned the Statue of Liberty...dang...

Than of course...I briefly confused West with East (as well as right and left--totally unrelated...)

Good Quiz.

It's impressive that you've been to 49 of the 50 States. I'll have to count how many I've travelled to.

Vicki,

I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz. The Alaska question was a bit tricky. It's easier to understand the answer to the question if you look at a globe.

The Aleutian Islands cross the Greenwich Meridian. This makes them the easternmost point in the United States. Pochnoi Point on Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska is at 179°46'E.

Hi again Daisy, on this one I got my highest score so far.. 68%! But then again, I had to retake the first 7 questions because my internet crashed midway. Man, your quizzes are tough! Wasn't Mt. Mckinley the highest point in the US?

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa Hub Author 10 days ago

Stella,

Thanks for taking another of my quizzes. Mt. McKinley is the highest point in North America, but the question didn't ask what the highest point in the United States or the highest point in North America was.

The question asked what the highest point in the *contiguous* United States was...that's the 48 states that are are connected.
